What Is the Ideal Height for a TV Stand?

What Is the Ideal Height for a TV Stand?

The ideal height for a TV stand depends on how you plan to position your television. A TV that will sit directly on the stand may require a different stand height than one mounted on the wall.

At DJ’s Furniture, our standard TV stands are approximately 24 or 30 inches high. Both heights can work well, but the right choice depends on your TV, seating and room layout.

Before choosing a TV stand, you should have a clear plan for where the television will sit. If the stand is too high or too low, it can throw off the position of the screen and make watching TV uncomfortable.

What Is the Best TV Stand Height for a TV Sitting on the Stand?

When the television will sit directly on the TV stand, the height of the stand has a direct effect on your viewing position. Ideally, the centre of the screen should be close to eye level when you are seated.

This does not mean there is one perfect TV stand height for every home. Your ideal height will depend on:

  • The height of your sofa or chairs
  • Your seated eye level
  • The height of the television
  • The position and height of the TV’s feet or base
  • How far away you sit from the screen

Our lower TV stand design is approximately 24 inches high. It is often a practical choice for larger televisions because a large screen already adds considerable height once it is placed on the stand.

Before ordering, measure the full height of the TV, including its feet or base. You can then estimate where the centre of the screen will sit when the television is placed on a 24- or 30-inch-high stand.

What Is the Best TV Stand Height for a Wall-Mounted TV?

Most customers we work with now plan to mount their televisions on the wall, especially as TV screens continue to get larger.

When the TV is mounted, you have more flexibility with the height of the stand because the television can be positioned independently. The stand still needs to look properly proportioned underneath the screen, but its height no longer determines the exact height of the TV.

Our approximately 30-inch-high TV stand is a popular option for this type of setup. This design has drawers in the middle with doors on either side, providing a substantial piece of furniture and plenty of useful storage underneath a wall-mounted television.

The lower 24-inch design can also work beneath a mounted TV, particularly if you prefer a lower, more streamlined look. The important thing is to avoid mounting the screen too high simply because there is extra wall space available. You should still be able to watch comfortably without continually tilting your head upward.

How to Calculate a Comfortable TV Height

A common guideline is to position the centre of the television close to your seated eye level. You do not need to follow this measurement down to the exact inch, but it provides a useful starting point.

To estimate the right height:

  • Sit in the spot where you normally watch TV.
  • Measure from the floor to your eye level.
  • Measure the full height of your television.
  • Divide the TV’s height in half.
  • If the TV will sit on the stand, compare that measurement with the height of the stand and the TV’s base.
  • If the TV will be mounted, use the measurement to help determine where the centre of the screen should be placed.

Your normal viewing position matters. A TV in a bedroom may need to be positioned differently than one watched from a lower living-room sofa.

Should a TV Stand Be Wider Than the TV?

In our experience, a TV stand should typically be a little wider than the television. This gives the room a more balanced appearance and helps the television look properly proportioned to the furniture underneath it.

A stand that is noticeably narrower than the TV can make the television appear top-heavy, even when the screen is mounted on the wall.

Remember that TV sizes are measured diagonally. A 65-inch TV, for example, is not 65 inches wide. Measure the television’s actual width rather than relying only on the advertised screen size.

Before choosing a stand, measure:

  • The total width of your television
  • The width of the wall
  • The available floor space
  • The distance to nearby doors, fireplaces or other furniture
  • The spacing and depth of the TV’s feet if it will sit on the stand

If the TV has feet near the outer edges, make sure the top of the stand is both wide and deep enough to support them safely.

Choosing Between a 24-Inch and 30-Inch TV Stand

When a 24-Inch TV Stand May Be Better

Our approximately 24-inch-high design features an open cubby with drawers underneath. The cubby has an opening in the back for cords, making it a convenient place for a receiver, gaming system or other electronic equipment.

This lower design may be the better choice when:

  • A large television will sit directly on the stand
  • You have lower seating
  • You want the screen positioned closer to seated eye level
  • You prefer an open space for electronics
  • You want drawers for concealed storage

When a 30-Inch TV Stand May Be Better

Our approximately 30-inch-high design has drawers in the centre with doors on either side. It offers a little more visual presence and plenty of enclosed storage.

This design may work well when:

  • The television will be mounted on the wall
  • You want more enclosed storage
  • You prefer the appearance of a taller cabinet
  • Your seating is higher
  • A smaller television will sit directly on the stand

These are guidelines rather than strict rules. Your measurements and planned TV placement should always guide the final decision.

Do Not Overlook Storage

Customers often focus on the size and appearance of a TV stand without realizing how much storage it can add to the room.

A properly designed TV stand can hold board games, movies, electronics, controllers, blankets and other living-room items. However, drawer construction matters if you plan to use that storage fully.

Our solid wood TV stand drawers are dovetailed on all four corners. The drawer components interlock, and the bottoms are built to remain secure under regular use. This means customers can load a drawer with heavier items, such as a collection of board games, without worrying about a lightly constructed bottom falling out.

Door panels can also be made with either glass or wood.

Glass doors allow electronics or decorative baskets to remain visible. Many customers place baskets on the adjustable shelves behind the glass, giving them organized storage while maintaining a finished appearance.

Wood door panels are often the better choice when you want to tuck items away completely. They keep everyday clutter out of sight and create a cleaner look in the room.

Other Features to Consider

Height and width are important, but they are only part of choosing a functional TV stand. Also consider:

Cord openings for receivers and other electronics

  • Adjustable shelving
  • Airflow around electronic equipment
  • Drawer construction and weight capacity
  • Glass or wood door panels
  • The number of devices you need to store
  • Space for future electronics or a larger TV
  • Custom sizing to suit the room

Thinking about what will go inside the TV stand is just as important as deciding what will sit above it.

What Is the Biggest TV Stand Buying Mistake?

The biggest mistake is shopping without knowing the measurements of both the room and the television.

A TV stand can look like the right size in a showroom but feel too small, too large, too high or too low once it is placed at home. Television dimensions can also be misleading when you only consider the advertised diagonal screen size.

Before buying, know the measurements of your available space and the actual measurements of your TV. You should also decide whether the television will sit on the stand or be mounted on the wall.

That simple game plan will help you choose a TV stand that fits the room, supports a comfortable viewing height and looks properly proportioned.

So, What Height Should Your TV Stand Be?

For many living rooms, a TV stand between approximately 24 and 30 inches high will work well.

A lower 24-inch stand is often ideal when a larger television will sit directly on it. A taller 30-inch stand can be a great option underneath a wall-mounted TV or when additional enclosed storage is a priority.

However, the ideal height is not determined by a single standard measurement. It is the height that positions your television comfortably for your seating while fitting the proportions and storage needs of your room.

Measure your space, measure your TV and decide how the screen will be installed before choosing your stand. Those three steps will help you select a TV stand that looks right and remains comfortable to watch for years to come.
