What Is a Muskoka Chair? A Manufacturer’s Guide From 35+ Years of Building Them in Canada
If you’ve ever spent time at a Canadian cottage, around a backyard fire pit, or on a lakeside dock, you’ve almost certainly seen a Muskoka chair. But what exactly is it—and why has it become one of the most iconic pieces of outdoor furniture in Canada?
As a Canadian outdoor furniture manufacturer building patio furniture since 1989, we’ve made and sold thousands of Muskoka chairs over the years. This guide is based on what we’ve learned from real customers, real use, and decades of building furniture designed specifically for Canadian weather.
What Is a Muskoka Chair?
A Muskoka chair is a deep-seated, angled outdoor chair designed for relaxation. It’s known for its wide armrests, reclined back, and upright seating position that makes it perfect for patios, docks, fire pits, and cottage settings.
While often compared to Adirondack chairs, the Muskoka chair has become its own Canadian staple—especially in cottage country and lakeside living.
But not all Muskoka chairs are built the same.
Why People Love Muskoka Chairs
Over the years, we’ve noticed customers consistently ask the same questions:
- Are muskoka chairs comfortable without a cushion?
- How heavy are muskoka chairs?
- Can muskoka chairs stay outside all year long?
- Do I need to maintain muskoka chairs?
The short answer? A well-built Muskoka chair should solve all of those concerns.
Our HDPE Muskoka chairs are designed to be comfortable enough that cushions are not necessary, weather-resistant enough to stay outside year-round, and heavy enough to stay put even in strong winds near lakes and cottages.
The Biggest Misconception About Muskoka Chairs
A common assumption is that all Muskoka chairs are the same—and that they’re uncomfortable or flimsy.
The truth is, construction quality makes a huge difference.
Many store-bought versions rely on basic screw-fastened designs where the structure depends heavily on screws holding everything together. Over time, this can lead to loosening or breakage.
That’s not how we build ours.
How We Build Our Muskoka Chairs (Why It Matters)
We manufacture all of our outdoor patio furniture ourselves in Ontario, Canada, including every Muskoka chair we sell.
Our chairs are made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene) plastic, which is known for its exceptional strength-to-density ratio and extreme weather resistance.
Here’s what makes it different:
- Resistant to rain, snow, ice, and salt
- UV-inhibited pigment to reduce fading
- Colour runs throughout the material (not just surface-coated)
- Will not rot, crack, or split like wood
- Extremely low maintenance
Even if the surface gets scratched, the colour remains consistent throughout the material.
Built Stronger: Lock-Block Construction vs Standard Screws
One of the biggest differences in our chairs is the way they are assembled.
Instead of relying on screws to hold weight and structure, we use a lock-block interlocking design where each piece fits tightly together and is secured with a stainless steel bolt.
This matters because:
- The Plastic carries the load—not the screws
- Interlocking joints prevent structural loosening
- Stainless steel hardware resists corrosion
- A reinforced seat brace helps prevent sagging over time
Our HDPE material is 3/4 inch thick and intentionally heavy, which adds stability and prevents the chair from being blown around in high winds—especially important for lakeside and cottage use.
Where People Actually Use Muskoka Chairs
From customer feedback and our own experience, Muskoka chairs tend to end up in the same favourite places:
- Front porches for everyday relaxation, even smaller balconies
- Around backyard fire pits for evenings with family
- On docks at the cottage overlooking the water
- Beside pools in the summer months
One thing we hear often from cottage owners is how convenient it is not having to store them every winter. They’re built to stay outside year-round, even in harsh Canadian conditions.
Do You Need a Cushion?
Most customers are surprised to find they don’t need one.
Because of the chair’s ergonomic angle and smooth HDPE finish, it’s comfortable for long periods without extra padding. That means no cushions to drag in and out when weather changes—something many people appreciate more than they expect.
What We Tell First-Time Buyers
If you’re buying your first Muskoka chair, don’t just look at the style—look at how it’s built.
A cheaper chair may look similar at first, but construction quality determines whether it lasts 1 year or 20 years.
Even if you spend a little more upfront, a well-built chair is often cheaper long-term than replacing lower-quality furniture every few seasons.
Built for Canadian Weather (Because We Live With It Too)
We’re a family-owned manufacturer that’s been building outdoor furniture in Ontario since 1989.
Our chairs aren’t just designed for Canadian weather—they’re tested in it. We use them ourselves at our home, around our fire pits, on our porches, and at the cottage.
That’s why we confidently offer a 25-year warranty and stand behind every piece we make.
Because when you build something for your own backyard, you build it differently.
